The Prosecutor General's Office of Moldova announced the suspicion to the ex-President of the country Igor Dodon.

He is believed to be involved in the scheme of embezzling public funds through the state energy company Energocom.

According to the investigators, because of the incident, the state incurred almost $ 12 million in losses ($ 11.927 million).

NewsMaker clarified that Dodon himself told reporters about the suspicion after he was interrogated at the Prosecutor General's Office on December 29.

The Moldovan ex-president specified, that during interrogation he was shown the orders he had signed when he was the Minister of Economy.

At the same time, he claims that he received the authority to sign such documents only a week later.

Dodon said that he did not intend to flee in connection with the charges and, moreover, was ready to further cooperate with the investigation.

He considers himself innocent, and called the case an attempt to distract residents of the country from the increase in tariffs and prices.

The Energocom case began to be investigated in September 2021. According to the investigation, in early 2008, the company's management conspired with officials from the Ministry of Economy, the National Agency for Energy Regulation, as well as others, including from abroad.

The essence of the conspiracy, reportedly, was in increasing the purchase price of electricity.

The defendants in the case, according to the investigation, appropriated the difference.

Dodon at that time headed the Ministry of Economy of Moldova.
