More than a third of Russian citizens consider “justified” in the war against Ukraine use of nuclear weapons.
This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted in June 2024 by Levada Center.
As sociologists have found, 10% of respondents “definitely” support a nuclear strike, and another 24% consider it “rather expedient.”
Share of nuclear strike supporters escalation increased by 5 percentage points over the past year and became a record for the entire war.
The majority is still against the use of nuclear weapons – 52%, but their share is decreasing: in April 2023 there were 56%.
The greatest attraction to nuclear war is experienced by pensioners who regularly watch Russian television and “approve” of the activities of Vladimir Putin. In the age group 55+, the share of approving responses to a nuclear strike reaches 35%, and among those who get information from TV programs – 41%.
“The view that the use of nuclear weapons cannot be justified is more common among young Russians (63% of those aged 18-24), those who believe the country is heading in the wrong direction (64% ) and those who do not approve of the activities of the current president (72%),” says the conclusions of the non-governmental Russian organization Levada Center.
Recall that previously Russian President Vladimir Putin equated defeat in Ukraine to the destruction of Russian statehood. And this, according to doctrine, allows him to use nuclear weapons.
