During the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists have found many links between infection and other serious diseases. A recent study, for example, showed that regardless of the severity of the disease, coronavirus infection can cause the same changes in the brain of older people as Alzheimer's disease.
As part of the study, different groups of scientists studied the performance of residents of the United States and Argentina. As a result, it turned out that within 3-6 months after infection with coronavirus, about 20% of elderly people out of 300 surveyed encountered problems with short-term memory, writes MedicalXpress. At the same time, 34% had more serious violations, including those related to word search.
The experts also noted that the same olfactory region of the brain (which suffers from COVID-19 disease) is directly related to areas critical for memory. For example, loss of sensitivity to odors is sometimes an early sign of degenerative and life-threatening diseases. Like Alzheimer's.
