The Spanish Congress of Deputies (lower house of parliament) legalized euthanasia. Writes about it Reuters.
Thus, the country finally approved a bill regulating the conduct of euthanasia. The initiative was supported by 202 out of 350 parliamentarians. It is expected to take effect in three months.
“Today is an important day: we are close to the full recognition of human rights. We are on our way to a more humane and just society, ”said Health Minister Carolina Darias.
Reuters recalls that the law is designed to regulate euthanasia rights for terminally ill people or those suffering from a serious, chronic illness that causes unbearable physical or mental suffering – and cannot be cured.
According to the bill, an adult citizen of the country (or one with a residence permit) will be able to request euthanasia, who will have to confirm his desire at least four times. This decision must be made only by the patient himself. The request will be evaluated by doctors and members of a special committee.
Thus, Spain will become the fourth country in Europe to allow euthanasia. It has already been legalized by the authorities of Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
