Markit's purchasing managers' index rose by 1.4 to 55.2 points in December

The mood in industrial companies in the eurozone brightened again in December and points to stronger growth. The purchasing manager index for the industry, which was collected by the market research institute IHS Markit, rose by 1.4 points compared to the previous month to 55.2 points, as the institute announced on Monday after a second estimate.

After a setback in November, the sentiment indicator was able to continue the upward trend after the historic slump last spring.

However, in a first estimate for December a slightly higher index value of 55.5 points was determined. Economists had expected a confirmation of the initial estimate.

According to Markit, “accelerated production and order growth” are responsible for the improved mood in industrial companies at the end of 2020. With a value of well over 50 points, the indicator points to robust growth. The first corona wave in spring also had a heavy impact on industry. A strong recovery followed in the summer because government measures to contain the virus have meanwhile been significantly scaled back.
