Michel will leave the presidency of the European Council before the end of this year, when his mandate was supposed to end.
President of the European Council Charles Michel announced that he was resigning early to join the Belgian liberal party MR – Mouvement Réformateur (Reform Movement), which will participate in elections to the European Parliament.
This is reported by De Standaard.
Michel said that in connection with this decision he will leave the presidency of the European Council before the end of this year, when his mandate was supposed to end.
“At the end of June or beginning of July, the European Council will be able to anticipate this and decide on a successor,” he said.
However, he did not specify what role he would play in the European Parliament.
“I want to serve where I can be useful. I have no other ambitions. I want to play an active role in the European debate and help advance the Europe 2030 project. This will require reforms,” he said .
Usually, the post of President of the European Council is occupied by the leader of the country presiding over the EU Council. This period of time will include the presidency of Hungary, headed by Viktor Orban. However, the final decision regarding the President of the European Council will be made by the leaders of the EU countries.
We recall that it was previously reported that the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, called on Ukrainians to see a positive signal in the vote on budget support, despite the fact that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked its adoption.
In addition, we previously informed that Lieutenant General Igor Romanenko stated that not everyone in the European Union is yet aware of the threat the Russian regime poses.
