The European Commission launches legal proceedings against Poland for violating European Union (EU) laws amid a dispute over Warsaw's decision on the supremacy of the national constitution over European law. Reported by Deutsche Welle (DW).

The Commission expressed doubts about the independence and impartiality of the Constitutional Court of Poland. European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said on Twitter that the association tried to establish a dialogue with Warsaw, but was not successful. “It is necessary to respect the foundations of the EU legal system, in particular, the supremacy of European law,” he concluded.

It is noted that the Polish side was notified of the start of the procedure. Warsaw must send an official response to Brussels within two months, on the basis of which a decision on further measures will be made.

On December 12, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Zebro suggested that in the event of an aggravation of the conflict over the rule of law in the EU, stop payments to the union's budget and veto its decisions. According to him, the EU is blackmailing Poland in order to achieve reformatting into a “federal state, officially ruled from Brussels, but in practice from Berlin.”
