European Commission considers blocking EU funds for Slovakia

The process of freezing funds is only at the initial stage.

Slovakia may be left without funds allocated to it through the European Union. That the country has departed from the principles of democracy.

This is written about by Bloomberg.

The publication writes that the European Commission has already launched the procedure for blocking funds due to the fact that the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico decided to cancel the work of the special prosecutor's office, which dealt with corruption cases related to EU funds.

The process currently requires the approval of the head of the commission Ursula von der Leyen and is only at the initial stage.

The publication notes that Slovakia receives 80% of all investments through EU funds. Potential funding problems would be a blow to Slovakia and the eurozone, which is already struggling with high public deficits.

In total, the EU could withhold 12.8 billion euros through a procedure that would protect EU funds if they could potentially end up in corruption schemes. The European Commission is currently studying the issue of freezing all or part of the funds.

Recall that it was previously reported that Fico threatened Ukraine that he would stop diesel supplies.

In addition, we previously reported that The EU “failed” to support Orban and Fico in the conflict with Ukraine over oil.
