The election of Trump, who is skeptical of US support for Ukraine, has increased pressure on Europe.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Monday, November 25, after talks in Berlin with his counterparts from the UK, France, Italy and Poland, that Europe would increase military support for Ukraine in connection with the upcoming Donald Trump's return to the White House.
Reuters writes about this.
“Our goal is to give Ukraine the opportunity to act from a position of strength,” Pistorius explained to journalists after a meeting of the Group of Five leading countries in the area of European defense.
The election of Trump, who is skeptical of US support for Ukraine, has increased pressure on Europe. If Washington, the largest donor today, cuts its aid to Kyiv, European countries will be forced to step up their role in supplying weapons to Ukrainian defenders.
The publication notes that the defense ministers of five European countries agreed to meet in Berlin today on November 6, a few hours after Trump's victory in the presidential election became known.
Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz repeated Pistorius's promise to increase aid to Kiev.
“Europe must better coordinate its efforts, align its actions, set higher goals in order to become a good partner for the United States. Today, we must make it clear: Europe must step up its efforts when it comes to helping Ukraine, but “first of all… when it comes to its own security. Without increased spending, without awareness in every European society of the times we live in, everything is nothing,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, according to Pistorius, in January, the NATO mission based in Wiesbaden will take over the coordination of Western military aid to Ukraine. The creation of a new mission called NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) is seen as an attempt to protect the aid mechanism from any interference by Trump.
Recall that the White House officially confirmed permission to fire ATACMS missiles at the Russian Federation. John Kirby reported that the Biden administration “changed the guidelines and gave its own instructions” to the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the use of US weapons.
