The European Union is going to revise the Association Agreement with Ukraine in 2021. This was stated by the President of the European Council Charles Michel, with reference to the Ukrainian press reports TASS.
According to him, the revision will be completed this year. “Next year, together with the Ukrainian authorities, we will make a decision on how to develop and strengthen the partnership,” he said.
The fact that the revision process has already begun was announced in February by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal.
The Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union was signed in 2014, but it did not come into force immediately, since this required the approval of all EU member states. In 2017, the last remaining state – the Netherlands – ratified the document.
For this, at the request of Amsterdam, amendments were made to the text of the agreement, according to which Kiev was denied the right to become a candidate for accession to the European Union. In addition, they refused to provide military guarantees and additional funding. The agreement also prevents Ukrainians from living and working in the EU.
