EU regulators approve combination of different COVID vaccines: details

The combination of vector and mRNA vaccines provides a higher rate of antibodies that neutralize coronavirus.

European Union regulators on Tuesday , December 7, announced the approval of a combination of different COVID-19 vaccines both during the initial vaccination course and during the revaccination.

This was reported with reference to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Center on Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports AFP.

It is noted that, according to new data, the combination of vector vaccines with drugs made on the basis of mRNA technology provides a higher rate of antibodies that neutralize coronavirus.

“While research continues to provide more data on long-term safety, duration of protection and efficacy, the use of heterologous scheduling may offer flexibility in terms of vaccination options,” the EMA and ECDC said in a joint statement.

According to The Guardian, this flexibility “can be critical to ensure rapid deployment in low- and middle-income countries,” where vaccine supply from individual manufacturers may be volatile.

Note that inoculation with two doses of different COVID-19 vaccines is called a “heterologous primary vaccination”, and the use of another drug during booster vaccination (three to six months after the initial course) is called a “heterologous booster”.

Previously mixing COVID vaccines from different manufacturers has been approved in the United States. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization is still considering the relevant issue.

On Tuesday, WHO also spoke out against the introduction of mandatory vaccination against coronavirus, calling this approach “a last resort”, which can only be resorted to if everyone other possible options for improving the vaccination situation have been exhausted.

Recall that according to the Com-Cov study, carried out under the leadership of the University of Oxford, the combination of some COVID vaccines provides better protection against coronavirus. So, in particular, the combination of vaccines from AstraZeneca and Moderna provides 17 times higher levels of antibodies that neutralize COVID-19.
