The EU will respond decisively to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods.
The European Union has stated that it is ready to give a decisive response if US President Donald Trump resorts to imposing tariffs on European goods. In addition, the European Union condemns Trump's actions, who imposed tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China.
This was reported by France 24 with reference to an unnamed representative of the European Commission.
“The European Union regrets the decision of the United States to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. Tariffs create unnecessary economic obstacles and stimulate inflation. They harm all parties,” he said.
In addition, the representative of the European Commission said that “the EU will respond decisively to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on goods EU”.
“We are not aware of any additional tariffs on EU goods at this time,” he added.
The European Commission spokesman also said the EU would remain committed to low tariffs in order to “promote growth and economic stability within a strong, rules-based trading system.” He also reaffirmed the EU's commitment to trade and investment relations with the United States, “the largest in the world.”
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he intended to impose tariffs on goods from the European Union.
“Will I impose tariffs on the EU? Do you want an honest answer or a political answer? Absolutely. The EU has treated us terribly. They don't take our cars. They don't take our agricultural products. They don't take anything, really. We have a huge deficit with the EU. So we're going to do something very significant with the EU,” the US president said.
Earlier, it was reported that imposing additional tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China was the first step in the trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump.
