EU imposed sanctions against Belarus

Charles Michel

The European Union has introduced sanctions against Belarus. They will affect 40 Belarusian officials. This was announced on Twitter by the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

“In August, we expressed a common position on the situation in Belarus. Today we all agreed to put the sanctions into effect without delay, ”Michel signed the video of his speech.

Earlier it was reported that the leaders of the EU countries agreed on the introduction of sanctions against the authorities of Belarus. Alexander Lukashenko was not included in the list, as this would mean a refusal of the European leaders to dialogue with him.

At the end of September, the Foreign Ministries of the EU countries were unable to agree on a list of personal sanctions on Belarus. This happened due to the position of Cyprus, which was intending at the same time to achieve the introduction of restrictive measures against Turkey in connection with Ankara's plans to extract natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In Belarus, for the second month, mass protests continue over the official results of the presidential elections on August 9, according to which Lukashenka won 80 percent of the vote.
