EU decided to sue Britain over Brexit violation

The European Union has sent an official notice to the UK authorities about the launch of the trial process due to the kingdom's violation of Brexit rules. This was told by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, quoted by Reuters.

Brussels has decided to sue London over violations of the bill, which the British authorities were supposed to eliminate before September 30. The politician noted that London's attempt to unilaterally change the terms of the agreement signed last year with Brussels is in fact a refusal to act “in good faith.”

The bill, in particular, states that some provisions of the document will be in force despite incompatibility with international or national law. If the law is passed, the UK will be able to ignore the part of the Brexit treaty concerning trade with Northern Ireland: it will have unhindered access to the markets of the kingdom. Brussels believes that any violation of the Brexit terms would be a violation of international law and jeopardize negotiations on a future agreement.

In addition, the EU and the UK cannot find a compromise over the issue of fishing. London is reluctant to provide access for European fishermen to their areas, recalling that this is incompatible with the UK's status as an independent state.

The Brexit agreement, in particular, states that from 2021, goods that arrive from the mainland of Great Britain to Northern Ireland and then continue to Ireland or other EU countries will be subject to tariffs. But under the new law, London itself will be able to establish the rules for the movement of goods from the continent to Northern Ireland.

The UK officially left the European Union on February 1, 2020. By the end of this year, the parties agreed on a transitional period, during which most of the laws of the European Union will continue to operate.
