The European Union approved the third package of sanctions against Belarus in connection with the “ongoing repression against civil society.” The corresponding decision has been published in the Official Journal of the EU.
29 new names were added to the sanctions list. Among them are Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Anatoly Sivak, Head of Belteleradiocompany Ivan Eismont, Minister of Information Igor Lutskiy, Chairman of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee Vladimir Karanik, Prosecutor General Andrey Shved, businessman Alexander Shakutin, judges and security officials.
In addition, restrictive measures were introduced against 7 enterprises, including Beltechexport CJSC, the MZKT plant and the main economic department of the presidential administration of the President of Belarus.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas previously threatened Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko with new sanctions if the situation in the country does not change. The diplomat stressed that the EU countries will expand restrictive measures if the Belarusian government continues “to rely on sticks instead of an honest national dialogue”.
