Ethiopia reports arrest of nearly 800 terrorists in capital

by alex

Ethiopian police have arrested nearly 800 people suspected of “preparing terrorist attacks” in the capital, Addis Ababa, at the request of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray (PNFL). Reported by Reuters.

Law enforcement officers reported on the capture of 796 people who are accused of terrorist plans. At the same time, there were no additional comments about the operation. It is known that the arrest of the alleged criminals coincided with the outbreak of an armed conflict in the north of the country between the authorities and the NFOT.

In November, conflict erupted in Ethiopia between the government and rebels from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray. As a result of the fighting, hundreds of people have died, and thousands more are fleeing the country. Both sides ignore calls for a ceasefire.

The fighting is taking place in the Tigray region controlled by the Popular Front. The organization, which has been part of the ruling parliamentary coalition for the past 30 years, has been striving for the independence of the region. In power since 2018, President, Nobel Peace Laureate Abiy Ahmed has announced his intention to take control of the entire territory of Ethiopia.
