Estonia plans to build high-tech, modern border infrastructure.
This week Estonia completed construction of a 40-kilometer fence along its southern border with Russia.
Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Läanemets said this for POLITICO.
According to him, after 2025, “the eastern border of the EU, which runs along the border with Estonia, must be equipped with the most modern equipment, security systems and drone surveillance.”
Journalists write that Estonia wants to strengthen its border security as “concerns about Russia’s unfriendly actions towards other EU countries are growing.”
It is worth noting that Finland closed its border crossings after Helsinki accused Russia of helping migrants cross their border. The two checkpoints were subsequently reopened, but “they still fear that Moscow will try to use the migrant flows as a weapon.”
“We don’t have increased pressure. But, of course, we are ready if this happens,” Läanemets said, standing at the fence overlooking Russian territory.
He added that Estonia has applied for EU funding to develop capabilities such as unmanned surveillance and radar position monitoring.
Recall that Estonia accused Russia of a “hybrid attack”.
