The Turkish President also criticized the UN.
Turkey will increase support for efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine through diplomacy and dialogue based on Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and will continue to carefully implement the provisions of the convention Montreux.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this in his speech to the UN General Assembly in New York, Ukrinform reports.
“The third year of the war in Ukraine is ending, we are still far from achieving a just and lasting peace. As the arms race accelerates, the field of diplomacy is gradually narrowing. We will continue to increase our support for efforts to end the war through diplomacy and dialogue based on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the Turkish leader said.
He assured that his country would continue to strictly implement the provisions of the Montreux Convention.
Erdogan also noted that the UN is ineffective and called for reforming the organization, in particular the UN Security Council.
“With the establishment of the UN, hopes for global stability, peace and justice have blossomed again, and hopes for peace have been revived. However, we have seen with regret that in recent years the UN has struggled to fulfill its founding mission and is gradually turning into an inactive, cumbersome and inert structure. The values represented by the principle of “peace is greater than five” (permanent members of the UN Security Council – ed.), today we need more and more,” Erdogan said.
Recall, in particular, that Article 19 of the Montreux Convention states that during war, when Turkey is not a party to the conflict, warships enjoy the right of complete freedom of passage and navigation in the straits. However, warships of belligerent states do not have the right to pass through the straits, except in cases arising from the application of Article 25 of this convention, as well as in the case of providing assistance to a state that is a victim of aggression.
