The probability of a fire at the Zaporizhzhya NPP remains, but the risks of causing a real radiation accident are quite low.
This was stated in an interview by the acting head of Energoatom Petr Kotin. He also explained what a dangerous fire at a nuclear power plant could be.
One of the vulnerabilities, according to According to the head of Energoatom, it is the safety system of a nuclear power unit.
– A fire in the premises where the safety system of a nuclear power unit is located, of course, can lead to a radiation accident. But the block is protected. It has a deep protection system. Not so easy for such “monkeys” come, start shooting at a nuclear facility and break through all the barriers built, — emphasized Petr Kotin.
The most fire-hazardous facility at a nuclear power plant is dry storage of spent nuclear fuel.
– The fuel is located in concrete containers, inside equipped with metal baskets,” the head of Energoatom explained.
He noted that the threat of fire would arise only after a direct hit in such containers.
In addition, the probability large-scale fire at a nuclear power unit also depends on how close to the fuel it started. If it is an external fire, it will not have any radiation consequences.
