End of war in Ukraine: Switzerland makes surprise statement

by alex

Switzerland considers the Chinese-Brazilian "peace initiative" a suitable alternative to "warlike statements" Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

The representative of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Nicolas Bidault said that his country supports the peace initiative of China and Brazil to end the war in Ukraine, even though it does not refer to the UN Charter and does not mention support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Blick writes about this.

According to Bidault, Switzerland decided to support the Chinese-Brazilian “peace initiative” since it provides for a ceasefire and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, and is also an alternative to the “warlike speeches” of Ukraine and the Russian Federation that were made at the UN.

At the same time, the representative of the Swiss Foreign Ministry emphasized that any peace initiatives ending the war in Ukraine should refer to the UN Charter, noting that the same opinion was expressed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his speech at the UN Security Council.

The publication notes that Switzerland was the only Western country that was invited the day before, on September 27, to a discussion of the “peace initiative” organized by China and Brazil on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The publication notes that one of the reasons why the United States and Europe did not support the Chinese-Brazilian initiative was the lack of a reference to the UN Charter in the document, which they regarded as support for the Kremlin's strategy.

Bidault also noted that Switzerland is capable of bringing the South and the North to dialogue because it supports a path to peace based on specific proposals.

Recall that Zelensky sharply commented on the peace initiative of Trump's “right hand”. The president said that such signals from the potential US vice president are dangerous for Ukraine and advised Wens to “read history”.
