Employment abroad: what kind of help do Ukrainian refugees in the EU receive and how many have found work

by alex

Legal requirements are almost the same in all EU countries.

Only 25.2% of refugees from Ukraine work, in particular in Germany. In Denmark, 78% of Ukrainians have already found work. 66% work in the Czech Republic, 65% in Poland, 56% in Sweden and Great Britain, and 50% in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, in Germany, Ukrainians receive assistance in the amount of 563 euros, and children – from 357 to 471 euros, depending on age.

This is reported by political scientist Dietrich Trenhardt (University of Münster) with reference to figures from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, writes BILD.

Legal requirements are virtually the same in all EU countries: refugees from Ukraine acquire temporary protected status without a complex asylum procedure, are integrated into the health and social protection systems and immediately receive the right to work. But financially there are big differences.

Conditions for refugees from Ukraine in Germany

Ukrainian adults receive benefits in the amount of 563 euros, children from 357 to 471 euros, depending on age. Moreover, housing and additional expenses are covered.

Czech Republic: financial assistance

Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic receive 200 euros of emergency assistance, for five months – 130 euros. Medical insurance and group housing costs are only covered for a limited period of time.

Help to refugees in Poland

In Poland, they issue a one-time cash benefit in the amount of 66 euros, as well as a child benefit in the amount of 110 euros per month.

In four months, half of the collective housing must be paid for by the refugees themselves. As a result, according to the forecasts of the Polish State Economic Institute, already in 2023, Ukrainian refugees were expected to bring in more tax revenues than expenses.

“There is another reason for the low employment rate of Ukrainian refugees in Germany. According to the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Studies (IAB), about 72% of Ukrainian refugees in Germany have higher education – they are considered overqualified. However, employment is hampered “a long process of recognition of education for Ukrainians, for example, for permission to work as a doctor or pharmacist. In Italy and Slovakia, this is arranged differently: there refugees from Ukraine were allowed to work in the healthcare system as early as March 2022,” the report says.< /p>

At the same time, refugees often lack language skills. Experts hope that the employment situation will improve in a few months thanks to language courses.

Meanwhile, in The Netherlands they propose returning refugees to relatively safe regions of Ukraine. MPs from the BBB (Farmers and Citizens' Movement) party believe that refugees could return to western Ukraine.
