A capsule with cesium was discovered in an industrial area of a Russian city.
On Friday, April 5, in the Russian city of Khabarovsk there was A state of emergency was introduced after a local resident accidentally discovered that in one of the industrial areas of the city the radiation level had jumped sharply.
This was reported by the Novaya Gazeta publication with reference to volunteers of the radiation control group who arrived in the mentioned area earlier than the Ministry of Emergency Situations employees.
According to them, the dosimeter at the emergency site at the peak value showed up to 800 microsieverts, which is 1600 times more than the safe value.
Volunteers were unable to find the source of radioactive contamination on their own; they only identified the area where the radioactivity was greatest.
Over time, EMERCOM employees fenced off an area of 30 meters, where they found a capsule with cesium from a flaw detector. The find was placed in a protective container and taken out for disposal.
The city administration plans to lift the state of emergency in Khabarovsk on Monday, April 8. Until then, monitoring will be carried out at the site where the capsule was discovered.
Local residents assure that the environment and people are no longer in danger.
Recall that last year in the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation at the Ural Electrochemical Plant, which is part of the Rosatom corporation, a cylinder with depleted uranium hexafluoride depressurized. The authorities also urged residents of the city of Novouralsk, where the enterprise is located, not to panic.
