Musk has spent most of his time since Trump's November election victory in a $2,000-a-night cottage on the newly elected US president's Mar-a-Lago estate.
Elon Musk plays many roles in the entourage of the 47th US President Donald Trump. He is Trump's most important donor, his most influential promoter on social media, and a key adviser on policy and personnel. For much of the post-Election Day period, he has also been a tenant at one of Trump's properties.
The New York Times reports this, citing its own sources.
“Musk used one of the cottages rented out at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, Marjorie Merriweather Post's former Florida home that Trump converted into a private club and hotel in the 1990s, according to two people familiar with the arrangement. The cottage he stayed in, called Banyan, is about 100 yards from the main house, according to a person familiar with the property,” the outlet writes.
Trump reportedly increased the initial Mar-a-Lago membership fee to $1 million.
The authors of the article note that living in close proximity to Trump allowed Musk to maintain close contact with the future president, such as “dropping in for dinner.” Musk is also known to have spent over a quarter of a billion dollars to help Trump win the presidential election and was directly involved in the campaign.
Musk also involved his staff in the transition process. In particular, they vetted potential candidates for senior administrative positions during interviews at Trump's headquarters.
Other members of Trump's team are said to have used his cottages after the election, including Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. But few have been as ubiquitous as Elon Musk.
According to the publication's sources, Trump's friends and associates have rented the Banyan cottage for $2,000 a night in the past. But it is not yet known what bill Trump will charge Musk for the stay, since the amount is approved after the guest decides to move out. In addition, Trump always has the option of not taking the money, although everyone knows that the newly elected US president never refuses an opportunity to earn income.
Recall that, according to the Financial Times, the world is expecting a “tariff war”. Trump can introduce huge duties on at least half of American imports.
