Queen Elizabeth II cut a cake on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne. This is reported by the Daily Express.
The solemn event was held at Sandringham Palace. During the reception, the monarch met with representatives of the local organization and residents of the surrounding villages in Norfolk County. This is the largest public reception that Elizabeth II has attended since October last year.
It is clarified that the Victoria sponge cake was decorated with the symbols of the platinum anniversary. At the same time, the 95-year-old queen did not cut off a piece of confectionery. “I think I’ll just stick a knife in him. And let someone else finish it,” she noted with humor.
Elizabeth II ascended the throne on February 6, 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI.
Earlier, Elizabeth II officially announced the name of the next queen. The message from Buckingham Palace, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the monarch on the British throne, says that after his son Prince Charles ascends the throne, his wife Camilla will become Queen consort. Elizabeth II also expressed the hope that the citizens of the kingdom will provide the future queen with the same support that they are currently providing her.
In the summer of 2021, Elizabeth II cut a cake with a ceremonial sword at an evening at the G7 summit in Cornwall. As the Daily Mail portal notes, the sword was brought to her by Edward Bolitho, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. When the adjutant noted that there was a knife for the cake, the queen replied to him: “I know there is, but this is more unusual.”
