Elections to be held in Turkmenistan after President's decision to “give way to the young”

Turkmenistan will hold early presidential elections on March 12. This was stated by Assistant Chairman of the Turkmen Central Election Commission (CEC) Bezirgen Karaev, RIA Novosti quotes him.

“In accordance with the instructions of the President of Turkmenistan, the country's Central Election Commission has begun preparations for early presidential elections to be held on March 12,” the CEC representative said.

On the eve of Friday, February 11, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the upper house of parliament that he had decided to give way to young and modern leaders who were brought up in a spiritual environment. The current president has been in office since 2007.

Presidential elections in Turkmenistan were last held in 2017. By law, the next elections should be held in 2024.

Earlier, Alexander Lukashenko estimated the likelihood of early presidential elections in Belarus. According to him, after the referendum on amendments to the Belarusian Constitution, elections of all authorities, in particular the parliament and the All-Belarusian Assembly, will be held again. The President did not rule out holding early presidential elections.
