Elections in France ended in a big surprise: exit poll results

The united left alliance "New Popular Front" received the largest number of votes.

Sunday, 7 July, the second round of early parliamentary elections in France, in which the victory of the far-right led by “Putin’s friend” Marine Le Pen was expected, ended in a surprise.

As evidenced by the results of exit polls conducted by Elabe on behalf of BFMTV, the United Left Alliance “New Popular Front” received the largest number of votes.

The bloc of pro-presidential forces “Together” is in second place, and the far-right “friends of Putin” from the “National Association” take only third place.

However, no coalition received an absolute majority in these elections.

According to forecasts, of the 577 seats in the National Assembly (lower house of parliament) of France the alliance of the hard left, socialists and greens “New Popular Front” will receive 175-205, the centrist bloc of Emmanuel Macron “Together” – 150-175, the far right from the Eurosceptic and populist “National Rally” – 115-150 seats.

The first official results are expected on Sunday night or Monday morning, July 8th.

The defeat of the National Rally is explained by the limited cooperation of Macron’s centrist alliance with the left, designed to block the far-right’s rise to power. In particular, Marine Le Pen's rivals withdrew more than 200 candidates from the elections in the second round in order not to scatter votes and create a single vote against the far right.

Recall that after the first round of parliamentary elections in France, the far right came out ahead. They are the ones who are skeptical about helping Ukraine. The turnout for this vote was a record for almost 30 years – about 67%. Macron's party received only third place.
