Egypt began to expand the Suez Canal

The administration of the Suez Canal announced on Saturday, May 15, the start of work to widen and deepen the channel of the transport artery connecting the Mediterranean and the Red Seas, TASS reports, citing head of administration Osama Rabia.

According to him, the expansion and deepening of the Suez Canal will make it fully bilateral, which will increase the capacity. The main work is being carried out south of the Big and Small salt lakes, in the area of the southern entrance to the navigation course of the canal. It was in this section of the canal that the tanker Ever Given ran aground on 23 March and blocked the Suez Canal for six days.

“The development project will be implemented in several stages. The first phase includes the implementation of a project to duplicate the canal with the Small Bitter Lakes,” Rabia said.

The laying of an additional 10 km on the section from km 122 to km 132 will increase the length of the northern section from 72 to 82 km, and in the southern part a 30-km section will be extended and deepened, starting from km 132 to km 162 channel.

Earlier, the court confiscated the container ship Ever Given, which blocked the Suez Canal.
