A resident of Kazan, Ilnaz Galyaviev, who attacked gymnasium No. 175 with a weapon, spoke about his plans on the Telegram channel 20 minutes before the tragedy, no one had time to subscribe to him. This was told by the creator of the messenger Pavel Durov, who in his post warned the public against a witch-hunt after the attack.
According to him, at the time of the attack on the gymnasium, there was only one participant in the channel – Galyaviev himself. He made the channel public 15 minutes before the attack. Durov suggested that he wanted to “leave it as a suicide note.”
Moderators of the messenger blocked the channel for inciting violence within an hour after receiving complaints from users, Durov said. At the same time, the first complaints appeared after Galyaviev was detained by law enforcement agencies.
Durov is sure that the security forces could hardly have prevented the tragedy, even if they monitored all existing Telegram channels in real time. He drew attention to the fact that Galyaviev intentionally did not begin to talk about his plans in advance and “did not give any specifics.”
The founder of Telegram stressed that the search for those responsible for the tragedy among third parties, including the creators of computer games and school principals, is explained by an emotional reaction to what happened. At the same time, Durov is convinced that society cannot be completely protected from the actions of people with an unstable psyche. According to the billionaire, one person in a million can be a sociopath, “ready for unmotivated aggression.”
“The inevitability of such events does not make them less tragic. But they should not serve as a pretext for organizing a witch hunt or turning society into a concentration camp, ”he concluded.
Consequences of the attack
The attack on the Kazan school initiated a discussion of all sorts of bans, which, in the opinion of public figures and legislators, could radically change the situation in society. Soon after the tragedy, calls were made to tighten control over computer games, which negatively affect the adolescent psyche due to the “glorification of violence”.
The problem was seen on social networks as well. The experts considered it necessary to “end with anonymity” on the Internet and pay special attention to filtering the published content. In addition, the State Duma proposed to create a system for tracking trigger words in messengers and social networks, which would make it possible to prevent such crimes.
They decided to pay attention to the circulation of weapons in Russia. President Vladimir Putin instructed the head of the National Guard, Viktor Zolotov, to work out a new regulation on the types of weapons that may be in the hands of the population. Another topic for discussion was the protection of Russian schools, to which it was proposed to involve the National Guards.
About the tragedy
On the morning of May 11, 19-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviev attacked the gymnasium No. 175 in Kazan with a weapon. He graduated from high school four years ago, and in April he was dropped from his fourth year at TISBI College. The attack killed seven children, a school employee and a teacher. About 20 people were injured, most of them children. Nine people decided to send them to Moscow for treatment.
Galyaviev was detained immediately after the attack and arrested on May 12. According to the investigation, the young man owned a weapon legally and was not registered with a psychiatrist and a narcologist. According to the information of the UK, in 2020 he was diagnosed with some kind of brain disease. Galyaviev himself said in court that he had no serious illnesses. Since the beginning of 2021, Galyaviev's relatives have paid attention to his aggressiveness and irascibility.
