Driverless taxi 'captures' passenger: man misses flight due to car malfunction

His self-driving taxi with autopilot instead of the usual ride began to circle in the parking lot of the Los Angeles airport.

Passenger Mike Jones from Los Angeles was unable to get on his flight to Arizona due to an unexpected malfunction of the self-driving taxi Waymo.

The incident was covered by the German publication Bild.

Mike, who had planned to calmly get home to Scottsdale, Arizona, found himself in a situation more reminiscent of a sci-fi thriller. His self-driving taxi with autopilot, instead of the usual ride, began circling in the parking lot of Los Angeles airport.

The passenger immediately realized that something had gone wrong and tried to stop the car himself. However, all his attempts to get out of the car were futile. The car, equipped with modern autonomous driving systems, ignored commands, leaving Mike strapped in.

The husband contacted Waymo support, but even their attempts to stop the car remotely were unsuccessful. Only after eight laps did the company's employees manage to manually stop the car.

By that time, Mike had already missed his flight.

A week after the incident, Mike is still waiting for an apology from Waymo or compensation for the missed flight.

“Where are the condolences?? This is another example of the immaturity of the modern digital world. The product is unfinished and no one takes responsibility for mistakes to the customer,” the man complained in an interview with CBS News Los Angeles.

Mike, who works in the tech industry, emphasized that he supports the development of autonomous transport, but after this incident, he refused the services of driverless taxis.

“Next time I'll just order an Uber,” he concluded.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Google, has not yet commented on this case.
