Conditions may be created for Trump to cut aid to Ukraine.
Donald Trump's return to the US presidency could bring dramatic changes to Ukraine, as he has long shown favoritism toward Russian President Putin and has spoken disparagingly of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.
This opinion was expressed by analysts Robert Hamilton and Dan Perry in a column for the American publication The Hill.
According to them, despite the disappointment of the Ukrainian government that the Biden administration has imposed restrictions on the use of American weapons for retaliatory strikes on Russian territory, “Trump will most likely be much worse.”
“The conditions could be created for Trump to cut aid to Ukraine in order to push Zelensky to negotiate with Russia. Former Trump advisers have formulated such a plan and repeated the Russian narrative that NATO expansion would provoke a war,” the publication says.
At the same time, analysts recalled that other former Trump officials, on the contrary, offered more decisive support for Ukraine, in particular the lifting of restrictions on Kiev's use of American weapons for strikes inside Russia.
“Abandoning Ukraine could trigger an earthquake in European politics. The EU will face a difficult choice: intervene to fill the void left by the United States and quickly strengthen its own defense and assistance mechanisms for Ukraine, or risk Russian expansionism remaining unchecked,” the publication believes. experts.
At the same time, the authors of the publication warn that Putin may receive the green light for further expansion.
“Every time he [Russian President Vladimir Putin] believes that he has clashed with the West – as in Georgia in 2008, in Ukraine in 2014 and in Syria in 2015 – he starts a large-scale war within a few years,” the analysts note.
Recall that during the election campaign, US presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized President Volodymyr Zelensky and accused him of “dirty attacks.” On the other hand, at the same time, the former head of the White House recalled the story of 2019, which almost ended with his impeachment. In that situation, according to Trump, Zelensky was “like steel.”
