Dozens of people were killed and injured in a massive fire in a prison in Burundi's capital, Gitega. It is reported by the local Iwacu on Twitter.

According to the newspaper, about a thousand prisoners were held in an African prison. As a result of the fire, all the hangars caught fire, except for the one in which the women were located. The accident killed at least 38 people, 12 of whom died from suffocation. At least 69 people were seriously injured.

Law enforcement agencies blocked the roads to the prison. It is noted that emergency workers and doctors quickly arrived at the scene, but hastily left the burning building. The causes of the fire are currently being established.

In early September, a severe fire was reported in one of the blocks of the Tangerang prison on the outskirts of the capital of Indonesia. The fire killed 44 people, making it the deadliest in the country in recent years. The fire started early in the morning when most of the prisoners were asleep. The fire is believed to have started due to a wiring fault.
