A commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is addressing the question of whether cannabis should remain on the prohibited list. The trigger for this is the positive case of US athlete Sha'Carri Richardson, who then missed participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo due to a 30-day ban. A decision for or against cannabis as a doping substance should not be made until next year, and it should definitely remain on the prohibited list in 2022.

Richardson had admitted the consumption in a “state of emotional pain” after the news of the death of her birth mother – brought by a reporter: “I apologize for the fact that during this time I did not know how to control my emotions or with my emotions I am human, “said the 21-year-old as an excuse. This has subsequently provoked widespread criticism of the cannabis ban.

According to the doping lexicon of the Institute for Biochemistry in Cologne, the use of cannabis “does not actually lead to an improvement in top athletic performance”. However, due to the calming effect of cannabis, an athlete in dangerous sports could go into competition more risky.

As of January 1999, the International Olympic Committee had banned the use of cannabis in all sports as a doping substance for competition. WADA has maintained this ban since 2004.
