The Argentine professional golfer Angel Cabrera has been sentenced to two years in prison for domestic violence. He must begin the sentence immediately, a court ruled on Wednesday (local time) in the city of Cordoba. The 51-year-old was arrested in Rio de Janeiro in January. An international arrest warrant had been issued against him.
Several ex-partners of the 2009 Masters winner had accused him of beating and threatening them. The case in Cordoba was based on a complaint filed by a woman in 2016 and 2017. With the verdict, the judge complied with the public prosecutor's request.
According to media reports, Cabrera's lawyer announced that he would appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court. His client will probably be released in a few months, subject to conditions, because he has already spent six months in custody.
