In Austria it is hard to imagine, but in Italy it is becoming a reality: Serie A bans their clubs from green jerseys.
Just imagine: Record champions Rapid Wien are no longer allowed to wear the traditional green jerseys – that would be unthinkable in Austria. But Italy's top division has decided just that.
“As of the 2022/23 season, it is forbidden to use green playing attire for field players,” says Article 2 of the regulations, in which the permitted colors are laid down. Pants and socks are also affected. In the future, only the goalkeepers will be allowed to appear in green.
The league did not officially justify the ban on the color, but according to media reports, Italian TV stations had pushed for a ban on green jerseys. The players should distinguish themselves more strongly from the green lawn in order to be more visible, especially for TV viewers.
Sassuolo Calcio is particularly affected by the change. The first division traditionally plays in green and black. These are also the club colors of the club. The Sassuolo jerseys will have to be almost completely black in the future. In the past season, Lazio also used neon green away kits.
