The course of the coronavirus has signs similar to Alzheimer’s disease, said scientists at Columbia University in the United States, writes the journal Alsheimer’s and Dementia.

American doctors have found out that with the severe course of the coronavirus, defects occur in special channels of the brain. These channels are responsible for protein accumulations in neurofibrillary tangles. Scientists have studied the brains of people who died due to COVID-19. They found the same changes in the composition of neurons that occur in Alzheimer’s disease.

Doctors warned that they also recorded high levels of amyloid proteins in the brain, which are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. According to doctors, this may explain the feeling of “fog in the head” in patients with coronavirus. Scientists are confident that infection with COVID-19 may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.

Earlier, scientists found out that coronavirus infection can cause more damage to the human brain than Alzheimer’s disease can do.
