Californian researchers have developed a chip with which they learned to determine the accumulation of trophoblasts in the blood – a sign of pathology of the placenta in women with a uterine scar. This will make it possible to detect ingrowth of the placenta into the walls of the uterus, even in the early stages.
According to a source citing a group of researchers, the development is an adhesive chip with a network of nanoparticles sensitive to trophoblasts. Then, using a microscope, you can determine how many trophoblasts are on the chip and how they are located – in groups or singly. After that, ultrasound is connected – to exclude all dangerous factors.
It is noted that previously it was possible to diagnose placental ingrowth only with the help of ultrasound, and only during pregnancy, and not at the beginning. It is also noted that the chip does not respond to the entire blood composition, but only to trophoblasts. Such a blood test, for all its simplicity, provides an objective and standardized approach that allows accurate screening even in the first trimester of pregnancy. Moreover, it does not replace ultrasound, but enhances it.
