Scientists have found DNA molecules in the soil that do not belong to any known organism. They were named “Borgs” after the pseudo-race of cyborgs in the Star Trek universe.
According to Naked Science, the molecules found differ from the genes of bacteria, viruses or other organisms. Scientists have decided that the “Borgs” are elements of extrachromosomal inheritance, such as plasmids. However, these are not plasmids – they are not similar in size. The molecules found can be as long as about a million nucleotides.
So far, scientists have found 19 Borgs. They succeeded in completely sequencing four of them. Genes characteristic of methanotrophic bacteria of the genus Methanoperedens were also found in the DNA. They can get energy from methane. Scientists believe the Borg population may outnumber the Methanoperedens .
