Deadly flooding in Texas has left at least 69 people dead as of the evening of July 6. The storm has also turned a popular local campground, Camp Mystic, into an inferno.

Channel 24 writes about this with reference to AP.

Deadly Flooding in Texas

A major flash flood occurred in south-central Texas in the United States along the Guadalupe River. The New York Times emphasized that as of the evening of July 6, the number of fatalities due to the storm had risen to 69.

AP reporters reported on a Christian camp for girls in Hunt that was devastated by a deadly flood. Camp Mystic was founded in 1926 and has become so popular that families put their daughters on a waiting list years in advance.

Before the flood, social media posts featured cozy wooden houses with green roofs, river landscapes, girls playing kickball, horseback riding, fishing, or performing dance routines in identical T-shirts.

But now the landscape has changed dramatically: a pickup truck is stuck on two wheels, one wall of the house is completely torn off, inside there is only a Texas flag and a few paintings. Nearby there is a twisted metal frame, suitcases, and tree debris. Rescuers are combing the banks of the river in search of survivors. The faces of the missing are on social media, the publication explained.

Chloe Crane, a teacher and former caregiver at Camp Mystic, said she burst into tears when she learned of the tragedy. “It's also sad and painful: the camp has been around forever, and now the cabins are literally washed away,” she said.

Nearly 36 hours after the tragedy, 27 girls from Camp Mystic are still missing, state officials said. Among the dead are an 8-year-old girl from Alabama and the director of another nearby camp.

Due to the natural phenomenon, the Donald Trump administration declared a state of emergency.
