Poland supported the decision to allocate Piorun (Perun) man-portable air defense systems to Ukraine. They are considered the modernization of another complex – Grom.
In the new version of the Piorun complex, the developers have increased the sensitivity of the infrared homing head by four times, so it can be aimed at a target at a much greater distance than the Grom.
The main purpose of the portable anti-aircraft gun -piorun missile system – destruction of small air targets, for example, drones. It is also effective against planes and helicopters if they are flying low.
The complex can destroy drones due to increased noise immunity. This is because, thanks to the modernization, he received a proximity fuse and a device for firing at night.
The main characteristics of the Piorun complex:
- weight (together with rocket) – 16.5 kg;
- rocket length – 1.6 m;
- caliber 72 mm;
- rocket flight speed – 660 m/s;
- effective range of fire – 500 – 6,500 m;
- target height – from 10 to 4000 m.
Piorun is considered to be the perfect weapon in terms of its characteristics. If we compare it with its predecessor Grom, then the weight of the complex has decreased by 2 kg.
It also received a greater range of fire (from 5,500 m to 6,500 m). In addition, the maximum height at which a target can be hit has increased from 3,500 m to 4,000 m.
In addition to Poland, Ukraine has already received weapons from Great Britain and the United States of America. The Baltic countries – Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia – confirmed their intentions to provide military assistance.
