Design of the week: a sofa from a Matisse painting

by alex

Designer Cristina Celestino plays with contrasts and brings an idea by Matisse to life with ease.

Time and again, the art of bygone times is the inspiration for today's design. In cooperation with Maison Matisse, Cristina Celestino was inspired by the legendary still life “Intérieur aux aubergines” (1911) by Henri Matisse. The Colette sofa takes up the idea of juxtaposition. Celestino plays with contrasts – not only between inside and outside, but also between empty and full, old and new. In this specific case, the geometric shapes of the rattan frame meet the organic patterns of the pompous upholstery. A perfect reminiscence of the artist's work. The removable cover is made from original yarns from the 18th century and is as sustainable as possible.

With her own furniture label Attico, the Italian designer Cristina Celestino stands for subtle reinterpretations of classic design objects. In her numerous collaborations with international establishments, the Venetian places particular emphasis on dealing with history. Based on Matisse's works, Celestino also wants to give her objects the value: to be valued, preserved and passed on from generation to generation. The handmade sofa costs 9,850 euros and is available from maison-matisse.com.
