Deputy Khinshtein to discuss with Roskomnadzor possible response to change in WhatsApp policy

The head of the State Duma committee on information policy, information technology and communications, Alexander Khinshtein, plans to discuss with Roskomnadzor measures to respond to the new user agreement for WhatsApp, which, according to Khinshtein, is contrary to Russian law.

The deputy explained that the new policy of the messenger runs counter to the laws of Russia, since the personal data of users should be the exclusive property of their owner. Khinshtein also noted that it is impossible to transfer user data without his consent to third parties.

– We will discuss with Roskomnadzor as a regulator in this area, what could be the response measures on the part of Russia and what will be the official assessment. If this requires an appeal to Roskomnadzor, then, of course, we will prepare it, – RIA Novosti quotes the words of the deputy.

He also noted that Russia could technically limit the work of the messenger in the country, but this remains a matter for wide discussion.

As a reminder, on May 15, 2021, the new WhatsApp privacy rules came into force. Now the messenger, which was previously part of Facebook, will transfer all account registration data, as well as the IP address and information about transactions to the parent company.

Earlier, WhatsApp management said that users who do not agree to the new terms will first be disabled from receiving incoming calls and notifications, then disabled from receiving and sending messages, and then deleting their account.
