In the Polish capital, a 31-year-old man tried to take a taxi driver hostage and demanded money and cigarettes from law enforcement officers. He was detained on Friday, July 4.

He is currently in the psychiatric hospital of the pretrial detention center. This was reported by 24 Kanal , citing the Warsaw Srodmiescie police station.

What is known about the arrest of the attacker

The police reported that a 31-year-old man in Warsaw called a taxi using an app. During the ride, he put a knife to the driver's neck and stomach. The driver was a 32-year-old citizen of Belarus.

According to law enforcement, after this the attacker called the emergency number 112, demanding a ransom of 100 thousand zlotys and a pack of cigarettes in soft packaging.

In this situation, the 112 emergency operator demonstrated professionalism. He spoke to the kidnapper for several minutes. At the same time, he passed on information to the services, the report says.

The attacker was subsequently surrounded by police, after which he surrendered. The attacker was charged with hostage taking with particular mockery, armed robbery and causing bodily harm.

The court granted the motion of the Warsaw Śródmieście District Prosecutor's Office, applying a preventive measure in the form of temporary arrest for three months. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

By the way, it was previously reported that a criminal group that kidnapped migrants and then demanded ransom from them in Poland and Latvia was detained in Poland. The group members were Ukrainians who were in Poland legally.
