Delay in US Congress' decision on additional funding risks global hunger – Newsweek

Wars and the impact of climate change have left many countries facing severe food shortages.

U.S. Congress urgently needs approve the request for additional funding from President Joe Biden as it contains essential food aid to fight hunger around the world.

This opinion was expressed by the American journalist William Lambers, who collaborated with the UN World Food Program, in Newsweek.

“War and famine are a tragic reality of the modern world that we must fight—we cannot shirk our responsibilities on any front,” he asserts.

According to him, the United States cannot allow Russia to win the war by leaving Ukraine, since this would be a dangerous signal that would encourage the aggressors.

“We must show strength to ensure peace,” says William Lambers.

The author also emphasized that wars and the impact of climate change have led to to the fact that many countries are faced with acute food shortages.

“We urgently need to increase funding for global food aid to help the UN World Food Program (WFP) and other aid organizations. WFP was forced to make tragic ration cuts due to low funding. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has also limited access to a valuable source of grain for WFP relief missions,” he writes.

Lambers believes that in 2024, famine is a tragic possibility for many countries in Africa, Asia and Central America.

“Charities simply don't have enough resources to cope with all these emergencies. This is why the request for humanitarian aid funding is so important,” he argues.

Recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin may face a new charge of war crimes, since there is evidence that the Russian Federation planned to lead to a deliberate famine in Ukraine and prepared for this in advance.
