There is a growing faction within the Republican Party that believes that the United States should not become involved in foreign wars.
The main reason for the delay with the acceptance by the US Congress of aid for Ukraine, the policy of isolationism adhered to by an influential part of the Republicans.
This was stated by former US Ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland, who registered as a lobbyist for Ukraine in Washington in the spring of 2024, in an interview with Forbes.
“There is a very strong faction that believes that the US should not be involved in foreign wars. So this is not just a delay, but a fundamental change in the US,” he explained.
Gordon Sondland stated that he supports the Republican Party, but does not agree with this position in cases where wars are fought over justice, namely over sovereignty and borders, as in the case of Ukraine.
“I am very disappointed that some members of my party do not remember the history of the 1930s. When Hitler's appeasement and isolationism led to millions of deaths,” he noted.
The reason for the spread of the idea of isolationism among Republicans, in his opinion, was the too open border with Mexico during the presidency of Joe Biden.
“Many Republicans are frustrated by the policy and have been unable to get legislation through Congress to change it. Therefore, they use other reasons, such as Ukraine, Israel, and say: until we solve the border problem, we will not do anything,” Sondland emphasized.
Gordon Sondland, before registering as a lobbyist for Ukraine, was a participant in the “parallel” channel of communication between the United States and Ukraine during the presidency of Donald Trump.
Recall that Bloomberg previously reported that the vote of the US House of Representatives on aid to Ukraine is unlikely to take place until mid-April.
