Herbert Müller's team got out of hand with a dropout after the break – 22:27.
Stayed here: Sonja Frey and her colleagues didn't have it easy in Horsens
The start of Austria's handball players in the qualification for the European Championship 2022 brought an expected defeat on Thursday. With multiple world and European champions and Olympic champions, Red-White-Red left the field in Horsens with 22:27 (11:12), but showed a remarkable performance over long stretches. Already on Sunday (6.10 p.m. / live ORF Sport +) the duel with the equally strong Romanians is on the program in the southern part of the city.
Austria's long-time team boss Herbert Müller described the Danes as “overpowering opponents”, but the Scandinavians were only able to play to their quality advantage after the break. Up until then, Sonja Frey and her colleagues did a good job, showing in front of around 2,400 spectators that it was no coincidence that they qualified for the World Cup in Spain in December and that they are represented at the finals for the first time since 2009.
The Austrians then slept through the start of the second half of goalkeeper Petra Blazek's 200th international match, Denmark pulled away with a 5-0 run to 17:11 (39th) and thus ensured the preliminary decision. Nevertheless, Red-White-Red showed a lot of fighting spirit and not only prevented a Danish victory, but even embarrassed the hosts towards the end of the game. In the 55th minute they came up to 21:23, but in the finish the bigger class prevailed.
