Alan Eugene Miller was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. local time on September 26 at a prison in southern Alabama.
Miller was convicted of the 1999 murders of 39-year-old Terry Lee Jarvis, 32-year-old Lee Holdbrooks, and 28-year-old Christopher Yancey.
The victims were found with multiple gunshot wounds as prosecutors alleged he killed Holdbrooks and Yancey at their place of business, then drove to another business to shoot Jarvis. The murders occurred at businesses where he had worked or had previously worked as a killer.
Before his execution, he was visited by three lawyers, two sisters, a brother, a brother-in-law, a spiritual adviser and a friend. His last meal was a hamburger steak, baked potato and French fries. After that, the 59-year-old man faced death with nitrogen gas.
According to journalists who witnessed his death, Miller's last words were: “I didn't do anything to end up here” and “I didn't do anything to end up in a cell “suicide bombers”.
The mask covered his face from forehead to chin, a controversial method that involves strapping the prisoner down and having pure nitrogen piped into the mask. This results in death by asphyxiation due to the ultimate deprivation of oxygen.
According to the Associated Press, Miller shook and trembled on the gurney for about two minutes, periodically struggling against the restraints. After that, he periodically choked for about six minutes.
Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Q. Gamm said Miller's execution was carried out according to procedure.
“There will be some involuntary movements because the body is depleted of oxygen, so we didn't expect anything like that,” he said during a press conference.
This “experimental technique for people” has been deemed unacceptable by veterinarians in the United States and Europe for the euthanasia of most animals.
The first execution by nitrogen in the country was carried out on Kenneth Smith back in January, also in the state of Alabama.
In 2022, Miller survived a botched execution: His lawyers say he was stabbed multiple times with needles and left hanging upright on a gurney in worse pain before the execution was called off.
“Tonight, justice was finally served for these three victims,” Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said in a statement. “His actions were not madness, but pure evil. His horrific crimes have forever changed three families, and I pray that they can find peace after all these years.”
The man who spent the longest time on death row in the world has been acquitted He was found guilty 56 years ago.
