Japan has executed a man who killed nine people by contacting them through social media.
On June 27, Japan carried out its first execution since 2022.
NHK writes about this.
Shiraishi, known as the “Twitter Killer,” recruited victims through social media, offering support to those with suicidal tendencies. He then sexually assaulted, killed, and then stored the remains of the bodies in his apartment. In addition to murder, he was charged with robbery.
The case was classified as a murder for mercenary motives and related crimes that shocked Japanese society with the scale of the cruelty.
The death sentence was handed down in 2020. The lawyer filed an appeal, but Shiraishi later withdrew it, and the sentence came into force.
The execution was the first in Japan since July 2022 and the first since the formation of the Ishiba government, sparking a new wave of public debate over the use of the death penalty in the country.
Let us recall that in North Korea three citizens were publicly executed for attempting to escape from the country.
