In the north of Greece on the night of March 1, passenger and freight trains collided. There was a fire at the scene of the incident. While it is known about 32 dead, 85 people were injured.

A passenger train was en route from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki when it collided head-on with another freight train near the central Greek city of Larisa, setting fire to at least one of the carriages.

According to rail operator Hellenic Train, there were 350 people on the passenger train. According to passengers, the collision resembled an earthquake.
“For 10, 15 seconds there was chaos. Coups, fire, cables hanging down, broken windows, people screaming, people trapped,” eyewitnesses say.
The exact cause of the accident is currently unknown.
“It was a very powerful clash,” said Kostas Agorastos, regional governor of the Thessaly region.
According to him, the first four cars of the passenger train derailed, and the first two cars caught fire and were “almost completely destroyed.”
“They were driving at high speed, and one (driver – ed.) did not know that the other was approaching,” he added.

Firefighters and paramedics continue to work at the scene of the accident. The number of victims may rise.
Greek media called the accident the greatest railway disaster in the history of the country. 150 emergency workers, 40 pieces of special equipment and cranes are involved in rescue operations.
