At the beginning of 2022, the Czech Republic will decide on the possibility of extraditing to Kiev the Russian citizen Alexander Franchetti, who was detained at the Prague airport. Such terms for making a decision were named by the representative of the Prague city prosecutor's office Ales Tsimbala, RIA Novosti reports.
“This case is still undergoing preliminary investigation. The decision on the part of the prosecutor's office can be assumed at the beginning of next year, ”he said.
Tsimbala added that currently the main focus is on the existence of legal obstacles to extraditing a Russian citizen to Ukraine. If the City Prosecutor's Office considers it possible, the case will be considered in the City Court of Prague, and then can be referred to the Supreme Court.
The final decision will be made by the Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic. He can, but is not obliged to be guided by a court decision, and will act at his own discretion.
On September 12, Czech police detained Franchetti at the Prague airport. The Ukrainian government issued a warrant for his arrest. Kiev accuses the Russian of participating in and organizing the Crimean Self-Defense units, which in 2014 contributed to the incorporation of Crimea into Russia. At the moment, the issue of extradition of the arrested Russian citizen to Ukraine is being resolved.
