Mourning events are held today in all countries where there is an Armenian diaspora. Every family was affected by a terrible tragedy. In Yerevan, the descendants of those who managed to survive during the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey come to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial every year.

12 stone steles rise above the eternal flame and represent the twelve provinces in Ottoman Turkey, where the Armenians lived. In March 1915, the Turkish government introduced the “Deportation Law”. On April 24, the most massive killings were committed. It is this day that is declared the Day of Sorrow. In total, until 1921, one and a half million Armenians were killed on the territory of Turkey and over 600 thousand Armenians were deported.

“It is our duty to the innocent victims and to those who survived that terrible tragedy. We are raising the issue of recognizing the Genocide, we want to tell the whole world that we remember and demand the recognition of this fact. We, those who are now alive, need this, so that such tragedies do not recur, ”said Nune Amirkhanyan, a participant in the mourning action.

In the Soviet period, it was forbidden to talk about the Armenian Genocide – for such statements they could be exiled to Siberia. And yet, in 1965, on the day of the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, mass actions took place around the world, including in Armenia. Tsitsernakaberd was built in Yerevan two years later.

As part of the mourning events, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia performed Verdi's Requiem on the territory of the memorial complex. And tonight Mozart's Requiem will be performed at the House of Chamber Music.

The fact of the Armenian Genocide was recognized by international organizations, countries such as France, Russia and 49 out of 50 American states at the local level. This year, Armenians around the world expect US President Joe Biden to recognize the fact of the Genocide at the federal level as well.
